At Shepparton East Primary School, our teaching and learning is guided by the Science of Learning — research into how the brain learns best. This evidence-based approach helps us design lessons and classroom routines that make learning clear, purposeful and achievable for every student.
We know that students learn most effectively when they:
Build on prior knowledge – connecting new ideas to what they already know.
Practise regularly – strengthening understanding through review and repetition.
Receive clear, explicit teaching – so they understand exactly what success looks like.
At Shepparton East Primary School, we also recognise that students learn best when their thinking energy is focused on learning, not on managing distractions or uncertainty. To support this, we have adopted a set of explicitly taught routines designed to reduce cognitive load and promote calm, consistent learning environments.
These include:
Cue to Start – a clear signal to focus and prepare for learning.
Lining Up to Enter the Classroom – encouraging orderly transitions between lessons.
Stand Behind Your Chair – creating a calm and ready start to each session.
Eating Time – promoting mindfulness and social connection during breaks.
Voice Levels – helping students understand and use appropriate noise levels in different settings.
These consistent routines across the school help students feel confident, safe and ready to learn. By reducing unnecessary distractions, we allow every child to concentrate on what matters most — their learning and growth.
